Alexander Volkanovski defended the title against Ortega

More than a month and a half is the interval between the UFC 265 and UFC 266 events. We waited quite a long time for the UFC to honor us with one great PPV show, and just like that was last night. We had the opportunity to watch two belt fights and the return of Nick Diaz after six years as part of last night's event.

Alexander Volkanovski and Brian Ortega in the main fight of the evening competed for the belt of the champion in the lightweight category. You also had the opportunity to watch this duo in coaching roles as part of this season's The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), and the culmination of all that was seen tonight.

Volkanovski and Ortega exceeded probably all the expectations placed in front of them and provided a fight that will surely be one of the favorites for the best fight in 2021. All five rounds were done by Alexander "Big" and Brian "T-City" Ortega.

Although Volkanovski dominated most of the fight and inflicted great damage on Ortega, there were a few moments when "T-City" was very close to finishing the champion and making a huge surprise. There are countless fights in which Brian Ortega has been largely dominated, but when given the opportunity to submit, specifically for the "guillotine" or "choking triangle", he almost always uses it.

Volkanovski skills

Unfortunately for him, Alexander Volkanovski showed that in addition to a fantastic set of skills, he also has the mentality of a champion and successfully defended himself against every attempt by Ortega to finish it.

The 32-year-old Australian defended his belt for the second time and is now likely to face the winner of the match between Max Holloway and Yair Rodriguez. Brian Ortega on the other hand was again brutally beaten in the title fight after being defeated by Max Holloway in December 2018.

However, the 30-year-old "T-City" has shown that he should absolutely never be written off and that he is always "alive" and threatens some kind of submission. He and Volkanovski provided a match that will be talked about for a long time.

Brian will complain about the "guillotine" in the third round, but today he fought one of the best fighters on the entire UFC roster. Alexander Volkanovski is truly a complete fighter and has proven that he can handle any situation.

This is also the 20th victory in a row for the great Australian. If all the fights are like this, we’ll really enjoy watching the UFC
