Five and a half months have passed since one of the most controversial fights in recent UFC history. Of course, it refers to the fight of Peter Yan and Alyamain Sterling, held on March 6 at the UFC 257 event, the fight after which Sterling became the new UFC bantamweight champion, but in a very infamous way.
His inability to continue the fight after an illegal kick by Yan, who led 2-1 in the rounds and had an advantage in the fourth, was characterized by a large number of fans by acting and running away from the fight, but with a belt in his possession.
As Sterling was rarely recognized as a true champion, a rematch was awaited, which was immediately announced. Unfortunately for Yan, but also for the fans, it did not happen soon after the fight, but the new champion decided to undergo surgery, which was followed by recovery.
That is now behind him, the trainings have started, and automatically then came the date of the rematch. As already announced on the sidelines, the fight will take place at UFC 267, on October 30 in Abu Dhabi. So Sterling will be the UFC champion for a minimum of seven and a half months.
Yan gave a comment
The impatient Yan could hardly wait for the confirmation of the fight and is now ready to do in the return match what he was doing very well in the first fight. He commented on the confirmation of the date with a post on Twitter.
"UFC 267 bout agreement signed. Time to return what’s mine. No games with my prey this time." the Russian wrote, thus confirming his intentions to do the job much faster and more dominantly this time. This fight should be in the position of the co-title fight of the show since Jan Blachowicz and Glover Teixeira have already been announced as the main ones.
Also, an extremely intriguing fight of the same program is that between Islam Makhachev and Rafael Dos Anjos. Sterling enters this fight with a streak of six wins, while Yan has celebrated in all seven previous UFC fights before the aforementioned infamous defeat.
Against Sterling, he had his first title defense, which he won last summer by defeating Jose Aldo. As this fight also took place in Abu Dhabi, the Russian will return to the place of his greatest success so far. That is now behind him, the trainings have started, and automatically then came the date of the rematch.
As already announced on the sidelines, the fight will take place at UFC 267, on October 30 in Abu Dhabi. So Sterling will be the UFC champion for a minimum of seven and a half months. Surely we can expect a great fight and a real spectacle!
