After a convincing May defeat by Rob Font, Cody Garbrandt had one important comment. The former champion of the bantamweight category concluded that he was too small to continue the fight and that he could not match some fighters.

And that, at least compared to Font, was true, but also the aforementioned fighter is one of the bigger bantam figheters, judging by the physical characteristics. The decision fell very quickly.

Cody falls into the fly category. And that project was taken so seriously that the Alpha Male Team told former champion Deiveson Figueiredo that there was no place for him there, due to a potential clash against Garbrandt in the future.

After all, this is not a fresh ambition. At the end of last year, Cody was supposed to fight for the title of the lowest UFC division against Figueiredo, but he contracted COVID-19 and was forced to cancel the fight. In the end, the category was arranged so that Garbrandt was left without the position of a challenger, so he performed again in the bantam, where he suffered the aforementioned defeat.

Having celebrated in just one of his last five fights, it should come as no surprise that the UFC has made the right decision and Cody will have to build his way to attacking the title.

Fights

The first fight has already been arranged for him, that is, it is known who is intended for his opponent.

It is New Zealand fighter Kai Kara France. The 28-year-old member of the City Kickboxing team is one of the most attractive fighters in the category and ranked seventh in the challenger rankings. Like Garbrandt, he prefers to fight on his feet and is able to knock out an opponent, which he proved in his last fight, when he defeated Rogerio Bontorino in March.

He was also well on his way to the challenger position, but he was diverted from that route by the defeat inflicted on him by Brandon Royval last September. It has been confirmed that this fight will take place on December 11, but there is no additional information about the event yet.

By going down to the fly category, Garbrandt will try to equalize the success of Henry Cejudo, who held UFC titles in bantam and fly. But he managed to defend a title at least once in both categories. Cody lost his immediately in the first defense, and then was unsuccessful and he wasn't in a position to regain it. Of course, there are two defeats by a stoppage from TJ Dillashaw.
