After a very successful and impressive debut in which he knocked out Dan Hooker, American Michael Chandler found himself one step closer to the biggest success of his career. Namely, the 34-year-old from Nashville will try to beat Charles Oliveira on May 15 and thus become the UFC lightweight champion.
Chandler found himself in the main fight of UFC 262 after Dustin Poirier refused to meet Oliveira and that is because he could have his third fight on 10 May with the most popular fighter in the world. If Conor McGregor and Chandler beat their next rivals, their meeting would be one of the UFC’s top options.
Of course, let’s not forget that Dana White has already stated that the role of the next challenger is reserved for Justin Gaethje, but let’s not forget that plans can easily change. And it seems to Chandler that the Irishman is a more tempting option than former challenger Gaethje.
Michael even said that he likes Conor's idea of a 'McGregor belt', but also that he thinks that the UFC will not fulfill that wish of their star.
Chandler on "McGregor belt"
"I like it," Chandler said on the subject of 'McGregor's Belt' and continued: "Conor is simply Conor.
Listen, you can say whatever you want about him, but that character is the biggest star in martial arts. Not only now, it has been a while, and it will be in the foreseeable future. Although it's a cool idea ( McGregor’s belt), I don’t think it’s going to happen after all, ”Chandler said in an interview with Helen Yee.
"I like the outcome in which he defeats Dustin, I defend the title in November or December, and he puts his 'McGregor belt' in the same match as a bet. I would love to have that rare belt in my collection. I would love to do that match during my MMA career."
"We will see what happens after I beat Oliveira and how many fights divide us until then," concluded one of the best lightweight fighters. Given the reputation that McGregor has, the dreams of every fighter are to fight him.
Along with Nurmagomedov, McGregor is perhaps the most famous name in the UFC scene and it is certainly a great thing to enter the ring and to fight with him, and especially to beat such a fighter. Chandler knows how much that would mean to his career as much as he would beat McGregor and win the belt, but we’ll have to wait a while to see if that happens.
