In mid-August of last year, Sean O'Malley made a significant statement in the UFC's bantamweight division by knocking out Aljamain Sterling to claim the throne. While sitting atop the division, O'Malley's ambitions have grown, with plans to reach the level of popularity enjoyed by none other than Conor McGregor.

The next step in this ambitious journey will take place on March 10 at UFC 299, where O'Malley is set for a rematch against Marlon "Chito" Vera – the only fighter to defeat him thus far. O'Malley reflected on the story of his career, saying: "There was a story that I wasn't fighting the strongest guys, and then in 2022 I fought Peter Yan who was ranked number one, then in the next match he fought the greatest bantam fighter of all time - Alja.

My last two fights, so they dismantled that narrative. I've never turned down fights, I've taken whatever they've offered me and in the end it's worked out perfectly," O'Malley told ESPN. He emphasized his willingness to face any opponent and admitted that the decision to face Vera was not solely his, but was also influenced by the UFC's choice, judging it to be a bigger fight than a possible meeting with Merab Dvalishvili or Cory Sandhagen.

Speaking about his plans for 2024, O'Malley expressed his desire to fight twice a year, starting with a rematch against Vera in March. "By the end of 2024, I'd like to fight twice. Obviously with 'Chito' in March, I'd like to go out there and knock his lights out.

Winning by decision is boring, that doesn't sound very exciting. And then I'd like to get another fight by end of the year and be the biggest sports star, not only in martial arts. I will combine two beautiful performances and be as big as Conor" The 29-year-old American fighter is obviously a big fan of McGregor, and surely he is a big motivation for him to fight in the UFC.
