The plan of UFC leaders was to face Tom Aspinall and Sergej Pavlovich at a show in Madison Square Garden, and that the winner of that match, as the "interim" champion, would create the conditions for holding a fight between the holder of the real belt, Jon Jones, and Stipe Miocic.

Aspinall recently knocked out Pavlovic and won the temporary title, and he will have to wait for the Jones-Miocic clash, to get his turn to attack the undisputed champion's title. Many fighters have become critical of this development, including Aspinall himself, and Brendan Schaub has now joined them.

"According to media reports, Dana White and Stipe Miocic were in a meeting after Jones' injury and Miocic said he wanted to wait for Jones to come back. If I were the UFC I would say, 'Okay, we can do it, but first you're going to fight Aspinall for the belt, we can't hold the division down for a year.'

"Let's say Jon actually keeps the belt and fights Stipe, I don't know, like next December. We'll have a situation where interim champion Aspinall, if he stays undefeated until then, and Jones, if he beats Stipe, will fight in 2025.

That is a strange and confused situation which, in my opinion, makes no sense".

It's hard to take the belt from a guy like Jones

The UFC heavyweight emphasized his respect for Jones and his legacy, but still insisted on the conclusion that the UFC's current plan, in his opinion, is not adequate, that is, fair.

"It's hard for Jones to take the title because he's the GOAT, he's the greatest to ever step into the Octagon, the best of the best. It's hard to take the belt away from a guy like that. When Jiri Prochazka vacated the title, it was expected because he had three fights in the UFC- u.

With Jon, it's a different situation, you can't just walk up to him and say, 'Give me that belt.' challenger, regardless of Jones' legacy. It just doesn't make sense. Stipe and Jon can fight without the belts, they've both said they're going to retire anyway."
