Dustin Poirier was on a fantastic winning streak until he faced Justin Gaethje; before the BMF title fight, Dustin Poirier fought Conor McGregor for the highly-anticipated trilogy match. The match was stopped after the end of the first round due to a doctor stoppage as McGregor evidently snapped his ankle.
The judges declared Poirier the winner; however, it wasn't a convincing win. Had McGregor not broken his ankle, the outcome of that match could have definitely been something else. In simple terms, it's unfinished business between Poirier and McGregor.
Poirier is in the lead against McGregor (2-1). Recently, Poirier agreed to fight Conor McGregor for the 4th time. It will be fascinating to see if the UFC can make it happen. As for now, Conor McGregor is getting ready for his return in 2024; the opponent is most likely going to be Michael Chandler.
Dustin Poirier on fighting Conor McGregor for the 4th time
In a recent interview with Megan Olivi on ESPN, Dustin Poirier answered whether or not he would entertain a match with Conor McGregor for the 4th time. "I probably would (say yes) – try to shut him up once and for all," Poirier said, as quoted by mmajunkie.usatoday.com. "But even if I slap his ass around again, he's still going to be chatting.
So we'll see. Is him and Chandler official? I don't know what's going on. But that's a huge fight. (Our rivalry is) 2-1 against him. I don't really see another reason for it, but it'd be a huge fight". Conor McGregor looks forward to being very active after he makes his return.
McGregor wants to fight Justin Gaethje, Dustin Poirier and Kamaru Usman. In about one year's time, we will find out how many opponents he actually faces that are on his hit list.
