Robert Whittaker is delighted by Kamaru Usman’s presence in the middleweight division; Whittaker believes Usman should stay and compete in the division and fight him at some point. Usman looked brilliant for a person who accepted a fight on 10 days short notice.
Chimaev capitalized strategically, but Usman showed great heart and should get more significant opportunities in the future. Kamaru Usman has yet to confirm if he will hang around in the middleweight division or not. Usman has unfinished business in the welterweight division, so it won’t be a massive surprise to see him drop down.
Robert Whittaker on Kamaru Usman
Recently, on the MMAArcade Podcast, Robert Whittaker shared his thoughts on Kamaru Usman fighting in the middleweight division and revealed that he would be interested in fighting Kamaru Usman.
“I am happy Chimaev and Usman, that fight did happen,” Whittaker said, as quoted by mmajunkie.usatoday.com. “It just adds more blood to the top of the game. It adds more boys to the top of the charts, which is interesting fights.
What’s next for Usman? Is he going to stay at middleweight? I don’t know. But that fight interests me. I like that fight. I’d fight a middleweight Usman. I don’t think it’s a bad fight to have, like, what are you going to do, make Usman fight through ranks 30-20 to get to the top tier? Consecutive defending welterweight champion, he definitely deserves to fight at the top of the charts of the middleweight division.
Whittaker further said: “How well he’ll do, we will see. But seeing fresh blood at the top of the game, that’s interesting. I like it. Seeing Chimaev and Strickland fighting, I think that moves things around.
I like it. It makes things interesting and exciting. I am here for it. I hope he stays. Stick around, Usman. It’s fun up here, mate”.
