Surprise Before UFC 294, Paolo Costa May Miss Match Against Khamzat Chimaev

The long-awaited match between Khamzat Chimaev and Paolo Costa could be postponed. Yesterday, Paolo Costa said that he almost had elbow surgery, but that he is ready for the match and that the surgery will not affect his performance in any way.

However, the long-awaited fight that all real MMA fans were looking forward to could still be postponed and that only 11 days before UFC 294, which will be in Abu Dhabi. Dana White said that it is an unforeseen circumstance, so he will have to look at the whole situation and make a decision.

“Yeah, it’s possible,” White said at a DWCS 66 news conference. “… (I should know) very soon. Very soon. Unless another big mouth pops up out of somewhere. Yeah, hopefully within a couple hours I’ll have an answer for you”.

Regardless of the operation, Paolo Costa does not want to miss the match against Khamzat Chimaev

Paolo Costa admitted that he had a bursa infection on his right elbow, the infection spread quickly, so the doctors suggested an emergency operation to act preventively.

Costa of course said that he is ready for the fight and that it is a small routine operation, but in the end it will be as the UFC decides. White said that he will make a decision today in the next few hours, but that he already has some options to replace Costa.

Current champion Islam Makhachev will not fight Charles Oliveira again, his new opponent is Alexander Volkanovski. Of course, Volkanovski immediately accepted the match even though he only has 11 days to prepare for Islam. The two fought in a fantastic match earlier when there were five rounds of pure perfection.
