The former UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling seems to be in vacation mode and wants to refrain from fighting until the early phase of 2024. Sean O’Malley snatched the prestigious belt last week and could most likely defend his belt in December next.
Sterling doubtlessly wants the rematch, but if the UFC offers it to happen this year, his response will be a big ‘NO’. Sterling thinks a fight with Merab Dvalishvili makes the most sense for his next move, and after showing up 2-3 more times in the bantamweight division, Sterling plans on making the desired jump to the featherweight division.
It will be very interesting to see if Aljamain Sterling can recapture the bantamweight belt.
Aljamain Sterling on what’s next
Recently on the Weekly Scrap Podcast, Aljamain Sterling shared his thoughts on his UFC journey from here and addressed that he is not interested in making a return this year.
“I think there’s only one name that comes to mind, and that’s Aljamain Sterling in the rematch,” Sterling said as quoted by mmafighting.com. “All jokes aside, I think if I don’t get the immediate rematch — if they were to offer me that immediate rematch for December, I’m just going to have to respectfully decline; but if they were to do it early next year like January or February, I would accept it in a heartbeat.
Aljamain reveals if he will move up or not: “But if I’m not going to get the rematch, the next guy in line has to be Merab Dvalishvili. Has to be. No. 1 contender. I don’t think any other matchup makes more sense than him.
Maybe I stick around at [135 pounds] and take like a fight or two and then maybe I explore [145 pounds], or maybe I just go right to 145. It just really depends. Let’s just see how things shape up before we just start jumping to conclusions and getting all crazy with all this other stuff”.
