Islam Makhachev calls out Leon Edwards to fight in October

The UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev has very interestingly hinted at fighting Leon Edwards for the upcoming UFC 294 event scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi. This sudden twist may appear to be shocking for many, but take a moment and think about it – a fight between Islam Makhachev and Leon Edwards can turn out to be one of the most intense matches in the history of the sport.

UFC fans were under the impression that Makhachev would be defending his belt against Charles Oliveira, who recently obliterated Beneil Dariush to claim his spot as the next title challenger. And on the flip side, Leon Edwards was expected to defend his belt against Colby Covington after beating Kamaru Usman twice and becoming the new UFC welterweight champion of the world.

Islam Makhchev will be fighting on 21st October, his opponent hasn’t been announced yet, but he recently took the time to tweet the following: “UFC Abu Dhabi, October 21st Makhachev vs Edwards What do you think? @ufc @espnmma”.

Makhachev’s call out makes sense because Charles Oliveira was pretty adamant about not showing up in October; instead, he confirmed that he would be ready to fight in either November or December. It will be very interesting to see how Leon Edwards reacts to this and if the UFC can actually translate this call out into one of the best title fights in the history of the sport.

Islam Makhachev hasn’t confirmed if he wants to make it happen at either lightweight or welterweight; we will soon have more clarity on this sudden call out. If not Edwards, Makhachev will most likely have a rematch with Alexander Volkanovski, who he beat in February, but the outcome left many doubts as most thought Volkanovski was the real winner. Hopefully, in the rematch, they leave no doubt.
