Islam Makhachev Gives his Take on the BMF Belt and Future UFC Match-Ups

UFC lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev, has frequently voiced his disapproval of the (BMF) belt, a one-time title in the UFC universe. To Makhachev, the belt is nothing more than a consolation prize for those unable to secure an "authentic" championship.
During an interview on Daniel Cormier’s YouTube channel, Makhachev didn't hold back his contempt for the title. “If Dustin Poirier beats Justin Gaethje, and he’s going to fight next for the lightweight title, he’s going to come with the 'BMF' title? I don’t want this stuff.
‘BMF,’ what is this? This belt’s for the bums. Who first fought for this belt? Masvidal and Nate Diaz. Two fighters who can never be champions. They gave them a belt and said, ‘Be happy, fight for the 'BMF',’" he expressed with disdain.
Despite the criticism, it's clear that fighters are drawn to the belt due to its financial implications - the holder of the belt receives Pay-Per-View (PPV) points, similar to a champion, thereby ensuring a substantial payday.
Gaethje's Upcoming Battle for Redemption
Gaethje is set to contend for the BMF belt in a highly anticipated rematch against Dustin Poirier. This showdown gives Gaethje an opportunity to not only claim the lucrative title but also avenge his 2018 defeat to Poirier via knockout.
However, Makhachev is backing Poirier for the win. “I think Poirier wins,” Makhachev predicted. “What does Gaethje have for Poirier? Poirier has superior boxing skills. It's going to be a boxing match”.
While fans are gearing up for the Poirier-Gaethje showdown next month, Makhachev is currently waiting for his next challenger. This may be Charles Oliveira, following his stunning victory over Beneil Dariush.
The Oliveira Invitation and Volkanovski's Potential Upset
Oliveira has extended an invitation to Makhachev to come to Brazil to defend the belt.
According to Oliveira, Makhachev had the home advantage in Abu Dhabi, and now it's his turn to fight on his own turf. However, the official confirmation of this match is yet to come. Amid all these speculations, another exciting development awaits in the form of Alexander Volkanovski's fight against Rodriguez early next month.
If Volkanovski delivers a spectacular performance, it could completely shake up the lightweight scene. In the electrifying world of UFC, it seems anything can happen.
