Exciting news has emerged from the world of mixed martial arts (MMA) as a highly anticipated welterweight showdown between Vicente Luque and Rafael dos Anjos has been arranged. This will mark the first appearance for both fighters this year, with dos Anjos having been absent from the cage for a shorter period in this time frame.
A Turning Point for Vicente Luque
Luque's upcoming bout with dos Anjos holds immense significance as he comes off two consecutive losses. The most recent defeat, a knockout by Geoff Neal in the eighth month of last year, was particularly devastating for the Brazilian fighter.
Prior to that, Luque was also defeated by Belal Muhammad in the fourth month of last year. Before these setbacks, Luque had put together a string of four impressive victories, including a retirement win over former champion Tyron Woodley.
His victories over Luque and Michael Chiesa once had fans and experts alike buzzing about him as a potential title challenger, but two heavy losses have since distanced him from championship aspirations.
The Return of a Legend
As for dos Anjos, the veteran fighter made his return to the welterweight division in the twelfth month of last year after a stint in the lightweight category.
He celebrated his comeback with a win against Bryan Barberena. This followed a heavy defeat by knockout in the fifth round at the hands of Rafael Fiziev, leading dos Anjos to return to welterweight. In the main event of UFC Fight Night 226 Vicente Luque will fight Rafael dos Anjos, whose location has not yet been determined.
The main event card will also feature Walt Harris, who will make his comeback performance, along with the following bouts already announced:
- Walt Harris vs. Josh Parisian (heavyweight)
- Azat Maksum vs. Tyson Nam (flyweight)
- Ashlee Evans-Smith vs.
Ailín Pérez (bantamweight)
- Norma Dumont vs. Chelsea Chandler (featherweight)
