A whole year has passed quickly since Robert Whittaker lost his UFC middleweight title in the fight against Israel Adesanya. That night at the stadium in Melbourne, “The Last Stylebender” had the perfect tactics, but we also have to agree that Whittaker wasn’t good enough.
He rushed, attacked unprepared, and even repeated the same mistake several times before it actually cost him defeat and losing the title. Adesanya, meanwhile, became a big star and defended the titles twice, against two fighters considered by many to be the greatest danger to him, Yoel Romero and Paul Costa.
After the win against Costa, he announced Jared Cannonier as his next challenger, but Whittaker ruined his wishes and plans. The former champion defeated Cannonier, saying shortly afterward that he was interested in the rematch against Adesanya and that this was what he wanted.
If Dana White is to be believed, i.e. what the UFC president said at the press conference, that fight will happen.
Dana White on fight
"I'm attracted to that fight. That's what makes the most sense at the moment.
But Adesanya also has a lot of options ahead of him. But Whittaker is definitely what seems most realistic to him. I expected Cannonier to be a much harder exam for him than it actually was. Whittaker looked really good and a rematch for me makes sense, "White said.
Adesanya celebrated in the fight against Whittaker with a break after three minutes of the second round, and in the fight, he broke the then champion little by little. Whittaker was within a string of nine wins before that fight and returned this summer with two impressive performances.
In his first UFC visit to Fight Island, he defeated Darren Till, and now Cannonier, and can rightly hope for the opportunity to regain possession of the belt he held from July 2017 to October 2019. Whether the fight with Whittaker will happen remains to be seen.
Certainly, this fight would arouse great interest in all UFC fans around the world, and that this kind of fight would pay off for the UFC. Whittaker has an extra motive to win. It is the return of the title, but also revenge for a fight in which he was not at the level he is at.
Whittaker will certainly do his best to win and to show that he is number one in his category, but he will have a great fighter in front of him who currently has no equal and who has a psychological advantage in that fight.
