Francis Ngannou surprised many when he decided to reject a new contract from the UFC. A Nigerian does not want anyone to have power over him. Speaking to The MMA Hour, Ngannou explained his position; “In that contract, I’m not free,” he said, as quoted by mmafighting.com “I’m not an independent contractor.
I have no rights. I hand over all the power to you guys. I’ve seen in the past how you guys can utilize your power against me, and I don’t want that”. The UFC did not want to fulfill certain wishes of Ngannou.
However, he is happy about his time in the UFC and has no regrets. “I know that I did everything right,” he said. “I don’t have any regrets. I wouldn’t do anything different if I had to do it again.
They didn’t want anything to do with boxing,” he said. “They were like, if, and only if, and in good faith, and I’m like, I’m not betting on that”.
Francis Ngannou on Dana White statement
Ngannou reacted to the statement of White who said that under the new contract Ngannou would be the "highest paid" in the UFC.
“It’s all their narrative, which is their narrative, and it can’t be proven,” he said. “I wish it could work. I really do. I really wanted, but not at any cost”. One of the conditions was health insurance for all fighters.
The UFC wanted to agree to it. “I just wanted them to know it was something I did want, and consider it,” he said. ”They said no, they don’t know business like that”. “At this point, health insurance for me is not a problem, but how about the guys at the bottom,” he added.
“They can’t really afford health insurance. And I have been there, so it’s something I carry in my heart”.
