Marcell Jacobs, reigning Olympic champion in the 100 meters, won the gold medal at the European Championships in Berlin. Jacobs finished the race in 9''95, a new championship record, ahead of the English Zharnel Hughes (9''99) and Jeremiah Azu (10''13).
After the victory, the Italian athlete said: "They have been complicated months, winning the gold is exciting and gives me confidence. I am not satisfied at the best of the race, I probably ran better in the semifinals and in the final I suffered a bit of Tension.
Okay so, the important thing was to get in front of everyone. Before the semifinal, trying to start, I accused a hardening of the calf. I closed my eyes, trying to do everything possible: in the end it was a simple contracture.
It has been a complex and difficult season, bringing gold home is exciting. I am not very satisfied with the race, I would like to see it again because I think I ran the semifinal better. Maybe I felt a bit of tension and didn't get a good start, then I managed to get out but the important thing was to get in front of everyone.
While trying to start from the blocks I also had a calf problem, but I tried to give everything, luckily it was a simple contracture. Time does not satisfy me, I always look for the best but I am happy. Half of the people believed that I would not even start, winning the gold makes me realize that the little work we have managed to do works and I can continue to do great things.
Now we will try to give satisfaction also in the 4x100. It is my fourth heavy title in a year and a half. I still need one, the outdoor world title, but next season in Budapest I will immediately have the right opportunity to make up for it.
In truth I was hoping to do something better, to go below 9 ”90. Maybe my calf discomfort stopped me and in any case I felt better sensations in the semifinals. I never thought I'd have to give up the European Championships, they had become the goal after giving up the World Cup.
I dedicate success to those who are with me, but also to those who are against me. It stimulates me. The future? The relay on Friday with the final on Sunday, a couple of meetings and the wedding. A nice program, isn't it?"
