Devin West, an emblematic figure with a rich 15-year coaching history in collegiate track and field, has taken his expertise to Westwood. His impressive resume shines with experience gained from the University of Georgia's male and female track teams, particularly in sprints and hurdles.

UCLA now stands to gain immensely from his skillset for their own sprints and hurdles teams. In 2021, Caryl Smith Gilbert, the Director of Track and Field, identified West's prowess and assigned him as an assistant coach for Georgia's sprints and hurdles.

This wasn’t West’s introduction to Georgia; his profound influence was evident when athletes like Elija Godwin and Matthew Boling clinched national titles at the 2023 NCAA Indoor meet. Godwin's laurels also include a gold and bronze at the 2022 World Athletics Championships, and an SEC individual championship in 2023 – a testament to West's coaching finesse.

Hailing from Berkeley, California, West's affiliation with Georgia dates back to 2015 when he managed recruitment and sprint coaching. His journey took a turn towards the Air Force's sprint and hurdles for the 2020-21 academic period, but the call from Athens in 2021 summer was irresistible.

Having begun his athletic career with football and track at St. Mary’s College and then graduating from Kennesaw State University, West has left a mark at various Power 5 programs, mentoring luminaries who shone at Olympics, NCAA, and other championships.

His stint at the Air Force is noteworthy. Under West's guidance, the institution revamped its record books with 11 updates in sprints, hurdles, and relays in 2021 alone. He was instrumental in guiding Michelle Roca to set a new benchmark of 1:00.01 in the 400m hurdles.

The team’s first-ever Mountain West title in the men's 4x400m indoor relay and the pioneering conference championship in the 400m hurdles were also under West’s watch.

Devin West's Coaching Legacy

Spanning a 16-year career, West's coaching portfolio boasts of six Olympians, 54 All-Americans, three NCAA champions, 41 conference champions, and over 70 record holders.

Beyond the Academy, his reputation flourished across Power 5 programs, notably for his recruiting skills. His stint at Texas with head coach Edrick Floreal produced record holders and All-Americans. Arizona State, Texas Tech, Miami, and Florida State have all felt the Devin West effect.

Starting his coaching voyage at Kennesaw State in 2007, West played a pivotal role in propelling the Owls to four Atlantic Sun Conference titles. Internationally, he has also made significant contributions, coaching state finalists in Georgia and participants in world junior championships.

A Kennesaw State alumnus with an interdisciplinary studies degree, West has certification from USA Track and Field as a Level I coach. On the personal front, he celebrated his marriage to Carley Faith Dart in August 2020. As West takes on this new chapter at Westwood, the track and field world waits in anticipation for the next success story.
