Carlos Alcaraz in Basel with Roger Federer

The ATP 500 in Basel is not only a stage for great returns, but also for new stars: not only Roger Federer on the court, but also Carlos Alcaraz's participation in the tournament has in fact been announced. Although weed season has just started, Carlos Alcaraz has decided to make long-term plans.

The Basel tournament, in fact, has announced that the young Spanish phenomenon will take part in the tournament for the first time and will therefore reach the winner of twenty Grand Slam titles. The Spanish number two could be the tennis player who breaks a liturgy that has been going on since 2017: for three consecutive years, it was Roger Federer who won the Basel tournament.

A domination by the Swiss that began in 2006 and only had short breaks: in 2009, it was Novak Djokovic who triumphed, against the eternal Swiss rival; in 2012 and 2013, Juan Martin del Potro won, also in both cases against the host.

In 2016, however, Marin Cilic raised the trophy; the year in which, however, Federer was not registered for the tournament, due to the knee injury.

2022 ATP in Basel

The city of Basel is once again hosting tennis. After two years of hiatus due to the pandemic, the indoor ATP 500 will return to one of the main Swiss cities.

The tournament, however, will not be the only big comeback: host and ten-time winner Roger Federer has announced that he will participate in the Basel tournament. The Swiss played his last game in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon 2021, losing to Pole Hubert Hurkacz.

The one in Basel, therefore, would represent the "second" return for the former world number one. The return to the field, scheduled for Tuesday 25 October (as reported by Sky Sport), could be anticipated by another great event, namely the Laver Cup.

Federer, in fact, will participate in the tournament he designed and will return to pair in the match of double with Rafael Nadal, reconstructing the well-known Fedal.
