Cilic: "My best match? The one against Roger Federer in New York"

In a press conference during the Roland Garros 2022, Marin Cilic was asked to select the best game he has ever played. The choice of the Croatian fell on the semifinal of the Us Open 2014 against Federer, in which he won thanks to the score of 6-3 6-4 6-4.

Cilic said: "I think the best game of my career was the one against Roger Federer in New York in 2014. Before our match, Novak Djokovic had lost to Kei Nishikori and everyone thought Roger was going to win the tournament. At the same time, it was a great chance for me too.

I was playing incredible tennis, but it's never easy to face Federer in a major. As if that weren't enough, the audience was all on his side. I managed the pressure in the best way and I took home a great victory." Federer himself has repeatedly admitted that he did not expect such a performance from Cilic.

The Swiss, who had just returned from the final at Wimbledon, was hoping to return to winning the US Open six years after the last time.

Federer's come back

Fans all over the world are hoping Roger Federer will be able to treat himself to one last runway before hanging up his racket.

The former world number 1 has been playing with a dropper for the past two years, having had to deal with a serious right knee injury. The Swiss champion has undergone three operations from 2020 to today, but he has not been able to return fully competitive.

The King tried a timid comeback last year, but played just 13 official matches with a modest budget (nine wins and four defeats). After reaching the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, the 40-year-old from Basel announced that he would have to operate on his knee again due to a relapse.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion will be present at the Laver Cup and the ATP in Basel, which will return to play two years after the last time.
