Roland Garros: Thiem beats Gaston to reach the Parisian quarters!

Argentinian Diego Schwartzman defeated Lorenzo Sonego in three sets in the fourth riund of the Roland Garros 2020. Schwartzman immediately starts showing his quality and dominates but Sonego has some chance and tries to keep up with the Argentine.

The set ends 6-1 but the result is a liar and the 37 minutes to play only seven games prove it. In the second set Schwartzman immediately starts strong with a 4-0 but at 5-1 he slows down and suffers the break of Sonego who in any case tries to react and the set ends at 6-3.

In the third set Sonego struggles and puts the Argentine in difficulty, he goes ahead even by a break but does not keep the advantage of 4-3 with Diego making two consecutive breaks thus closing with a dry 6-4. Few regrets for Sonego against a great opponent and yet another demonstration that especially on earth he can play his chances.

Dominic Thiem and the Gaston revelation

Schwartzman now will face recent US Open winner Dominic Thiem. The Austrian could be the protagonist of the negative surprise of the day with the very young Frenchman Gaston very close to a sensational and incredible comeback.

From the beginning the player seems to suffer the transalpine, already the protagonist of a great match in the previous round against Wawrinka, but Gaston gives in in the decisive moments where Thiem shows his experience and Dominic moves forward 2 to 0.

At this point the unthinkable happens with Thiem making a few mistakes too many and Gaston immediately moving forward in the third. Thiem reacts but on 6-5 he makes the decisive break with a foul Thiem in a rather unusual way.

In the fourth set Gaston begins to believe it, he immediately takes a break and keeps his serve until the end without conceding almost anything to the opponent. The challenge is very heated and goes on in the fifth point to point but in the eighth game in the fifth set it is the short balls so dear to Gaston that betray him on the decisive break point with Thiem who closes the match (even last game with difficulty).

3 and gains access to the Quarter Finals. Meanwhile there could be a case of match fixing at Roland Garros. According to what was published by the German website Welt, French police are investigating a possible combined tennis match played during this latest edition of the French Major.

The match in question is that of the first round of the doubles tournament between the Romanian Andreea Mitu / Patricia Maria Tig and the American and Russian Madison Brengle / Yana Sizikova. Specifically, the investigators believe, thanks to the information collected by the betting companies, that there was a game of the second set on which anomalous betting flows were recorded.

According to the investigations, the anomalous bet would have focused on the fifth game of the second set. On that occasion, the Russian Sizikova was serving as she got herself broken with two double faults in a short time and missed a couple of shots.
