Matteo Berrettini signs up to play Laver Cup

World N. 8 Matteo Berrettini has announced that he will play the Laver Cup in September. Berrettini, 25, is set to make his debut at the Laver Cup. Berrettini will represent Team Europe alongside Roger Federer and Dominic Thiem.

Team captain of Team Europe Leo Borg is excited to have Berrettini on the team. “Matteo has had an incredible run, not only on the grass courts this summer but really since the start of the year when he helped Italy reach the final of the ATP Cup in Melbourne and then reached the fourth round of the Australian Open and the quarter-finals at Roland Garros,” said Borg.

Berrettini 'excited' to play the Laver Cup

“I’m really excited to be part of the Laver Cup this year. I’ve heard so much talk in the locker rooms from the guys that have played it before about what a cool event it is.

Playing at TD Garden, having Bjorn Borg as my Captain, and being on the same team as one of my childhood idols, Roger Federer, is going to be a really special experience," Berrettini said. At this past Wimbledon, Berrettini made his maiden Grand Slam final.

Berrettini finished the grass season with an 11-1 record as he won it all at the Queen's Club and finished runner-up at Wimbledon. "Obviously now I’m disappointed and angry because I lost and because I’m convinced that I didn’t play my best tennis, though the fact that on the other side of the court stood a player such as Novak must also be taken into account; that’s why he is one of the best ever.

What was missing today? To play a little better from the baseline. However, for me it’s been an incredible two weeks that left me with the knowledge that I can win this title. What I will do in the coming weeks, months and years is very clear to me: I’ll work to try to lift that trophy," Berrettini said after the final.

“I stepped onto the court knowing that his weapons defuse mine, it doesn’t always happen automatically and it doesn’t always happen in a final. He is the only player who could probably beat me, the only one who could put me in trouble on grass, I felt very good and emotionally that is not easy to manage.

On this side, I’m sure this experience will help me. With my team we said we are on the right path and I agree on this."
