Wimbledon 2021: Serena Williams withdrawn, Federer in the 2nd round

Roger Federer passes the first round cut on the Church Road lawns for the eighteenth time in his career, but he probably doesn't give himself the answers he needed, taking advantage of Adrian Mannarino's retirement after four sets of pain at Wimbledon 2021.

After a discreet first set, enhanced above all by a very good percentage of points with the first serve, Federer finds himself without room for error in the heart of the fourth set. Mannarino, due to a distortion he gets in the seventh game, clumsily tries to stay attached to the match until the early stages of the fifth.

Nothing more. After just under three hours of play the luminous scoreboard settles on 6-4 6-7 (4) 3-6 6-2. Federer, short of valid solutions from the baseline and also struggling with the service during the first weekly outing, will see it in the second round with Richard Gasquet: in conditions of absolute normality the French should not be a problem.

Presumably not even for this Federer. A few minutes after the injury suffered by Adrian Mannarino in the match against Roger Federer, the Centre Court of Wimbledon 2021 also had to witness the surrender of Serena Williams.

The American champion found the first break of the match in the fourth game using Aliaksandra Sasnovich's long forehand, but I then remedied the immediate against break by playing a bad game.

Serena Williams however showed severe pain in her right leg during the changeover and was forced to resort to medical time out.

Called to serve in the seventh game, the player born in 1981 began to show all her emotions and in tears she decided to withdraw. Serena was warmly greeted by all the crowd present on the Centre Court. Hodgkin's lymphoma, six months of chemotherapy and radiotherapy did not stop Carla Suarez Navarro, who recovered, returned to the court at the Roland Garros 2021 and she played an amazing first round match at Wimbledon 2021 against world no.1 Ashleigh Barty.

On Center Court, Carla was defeated in three sets. Barty dominated the first and third, Carla won the second at the tie-break. Final score 6-1 6(1)-7 6-1. It was the last match of the Spaniard on the lawns of the All England Club.

She will retire at the end of the season. In the second set, on the score of 4-3 (30-40), Suarez Navarro was the protagonist of a sensational backhand winner played after a real tennis exchange for grass-courts. A jewel and the point of the day.

Barty said about her rival: "Carla is a fighter, a great player, well liked by everyone in the locker room. I know she has a few more tournaments planned before closing, I can only wish her the best."
