World No. 1 Novak Djokovic didn't expect to reach the Mallorca doubles final with Spaniard Carlos Gomez-Herrera. Djokovic, who entered the Mallroca doubles event to get some matches ahead of Wimbledon, ended up making the final.
On Thursday, Djokovic and Gomez-Herrera handed a 6-4 7-6 (4) loss to Oliver Marach and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi to make the final. “I don’t think we expected to reach the finals,” Djokovic said in an on-court interview.
“But if we play well, we can return very well, we serve very well and I think we have a quite solid net game. “All around, everything clicked quite amazingly in the last several days for us. I’m just super thrilled to share the court with him and to reach our first final together”.
Gomez-Herrera enjoys playing with Djokovic
“For me it’s such a pleasure to play with him. I think [everyone] saw, we are so relaxed on court and we’re just enjoying [ourselves],” Gomez-Herrera said.
“If we play like this, we can keep going until I don’t know when. And it happened, we are in the final”. Meanwhile, in the Mallorca singles event, No. 1 seed Daniil Medvedev beat Casper Ruud 7-5 6-1 to reach the semifinal.
“I feel like it was a funny match. Maybe [it was] not the highest level, but I’m really happy to win and be in the semi-finals here. I’m looking forward to tomorrow,” Medvedev said in an on-court interview.
“I don’t think grass is his best surface, but in the first set he was playing top level and I couldn’t get any break points,” Medvedev said. “But as soon as he started serving a bit worse and making some errors, I tried to use it as fast as I could.
It was important to win the first set and not in a tie-break, this gives me a boost of confidence”. Elsewhere, Italian Lorenzo Sonego beat Alexander Bublik 6-1 7-5 to reach the Eastbourne final. “I am really happy with the match because it is not easy playing against Bublik, because he is an amazing talent,” Sonego said.
“Especially in the second set, it was really tough, but I am happy with the match. “I am full of energy because I like playing here. My serve is good for the grass court, and I like playing in Eastbourne. There are a lot of Italian fans, and it is good for me”.
