WTA in Melbourne: wins for Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka!

The third round of the Gippsland Trophy and the Yarra Valley Classic were played in Melbourne in the Round of 16. In the latter we saw a truly regenerated Serena Williams who seems to have started 2021 in the best way. Just over an hour for the American tennis player to get the better of the insidious Bulgarian Pironkova, beaten with the result of 6-1; 6-4.

Serena immediately starts strong and seems to be in excellent athletic condition and closes the first set clearly leaving almost nothing to the opponent. In the second set Williams makes a few mistakes too many and at the same time Pironkova seems to enter the race, we get to 5-4 for Serena with the Bulgarian serving, Pironkova cancels two match points, then the third and the advantages also fourth match point Williams gets the pass for the quarters where she will face the winner between Pliskova and Collins.

In the other matches the world number one Ashleigh Barty wins with some risk, who after dominating the first set, gives up the second and only has to close in the third to beat the Czech Bouzkova. She risks even more the outgoing Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin who under 5-7; 0-3 comeback against compatriot Pegula and then closes in the third set.

Jasmine Paolini fights to the end at the Gippsland Trophy who, despite seeing her start as an underdog, reaches the third set and forces the Czech Muchova to overtime. The Italian loses the first 6-2, but she doesn't give up and responds in the second set where after a break each, she gets the decisive break in the tenth game and closes 6-4.

In the third set the Italian loses her service in the third game and goes on until the end with the match that ends on the result of 6-2; 4-6; 6-4 for Muchova. Well Halep and Svitolina, Osaka gives a set to the British Boulter while almost surprisingly gives the winner of the last Roland Garros Iga Swiatek, who falls clearly in two sets against the Russian Alexandrova.
