In a day full of performances, in Adelaide, the great protagonists of ATP and WTA Tours such as Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka, Simona Halep and Ashleigh barty are finally back on the court, with the crowd filling the stands of the stadium.
The first matches of the year, even if only of exhibition, could not have started in a more atypical way. Adelaide's performance was held this night with some of the best tennis players in the world competing to cheer the audience.
The main event of the day could only be the challenge between world number one Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner. Things did not go at all as expected with the number one in the world, who, a few minutes before the performance, announced his retirement due to blisters in his hand that forced him not to appear in front of the 4000 spectators.
In place of him Filip Krajinovic played who performed well and won the first set with the result of 6-3. In a very balanced match where both tennis players held their serve without decisive problems it was the only break made by the Serbian in the fourth game with Krajinovic who went on 3-1 and closed without particular problems at 6-3.
At this point comes the umpteenth surprise of this day with Djokovic who returns to the field and 'seems' to have forgotten the problem with his blisters, plays without problems and wins his set with the result of 6-3.
At the end of the match, certainly very anomalous for Sinner, forced to face (in an exhibition) two opponents in a few minutes, Djokovic then clarified that he did not want to risk because the ATP Cup and the Australian Open were imminent, but at the same time he did not want to disappoint the audience and after working with his physiotherapist he decided to return to the field.
In the men's exhibition, Rafael Nadal defeated Dominic Thiem with the final score of 7-5 6-4, at the end of a very balanced match, but where once again the Spaniard showed his superiority. Rafa already seems in excellent shape, ready to break a curse that has been going on in Australian for years.
Nadal is ready to play the highly anticipated Australian Open in Melbourne, which will begin on February 8th, with the likely presence of the crowd in the stands of the courts, where he will go in search of his 21st Slam title, in order to break Roger Federer's record.
In the women's exhibition, Serena Williams beat Naomi Osaka, a great rival in recent years, in the super tiebreak of the third set. The match ended with the final result of 6-2 2-6 10-7. The two tenists both showed excellent form, alternating super shots with some mistakes.
