Rafael Nadal's new amazing record

Thanks to this season, the Spanish tennis champion Rafael Nadal ended in the Top-2 of the ATP ranking for the fourth consecutive year and with the record of 12 times in his career, thus leaving Roger Federer behind at 11.

Since the beginning of the ATP Ranking, which took place in 1973, 26 tennis players have finished the season in the Top-2 and only eight have managed to be there for 4 consecutive times. The first tennis player in history to achieve this was Jimmy Connors, later followed by his great rivals Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe and Ivan Lendl.

In the 90s, Pete Sampras also managed to give this, as well as Connors reaching the first two positions of the ranking 6 times.

Nadal's record in the Top 2

In the standings Roger Federer finished the season in the Top 2 for 8 consecutive years, a record that will hardly be broken.

Two years after Federer Nadal also entered the standings, managing to finish in the Top 2 for 7 consecutive times. Rafa returned to the highest level in 2017 and finished the season in the Top 2 for four years again, entering the record book again.

Assuming that Nadal was absent from the top positions only for some physical problem, it must be reiterated that Nadal has remained at the top of the circuit even in recent years. Then 2020 was a different year for the Spaniard, who, despite the Pandemic, managed to win Roland Garros for the thirteenth time, thus bringing the Grand Slam titles achieved to 20 and thus reaching the top of this particular ranking Roger Federer.

Until the Roland Garros it had not been a great year for Rafa with the Parisian tournament which remained the only tournament won in the whole of 2020. Nadal finished the season then trying to win the Atp Finals at the end of the year, one of the few tournaments that he misses his immense showcase but has lost in the semifinals against the Russian Daniil Medvedev.

It was a strange match for Rafa who served for the match but was eventually forced to give in to the future winner of the tournament. Rafael Nadal, with Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka, Ashleigh Barty, Simona Halep and all the others greatests tennis stars on the planet will come back for the upcoming Australian Open 2021, which will be held in Melbourne from 8 February: it will be the most awaited sports event of the first part of the new season.

It will be a very spectacualr season, and all of us hope without the problems of the last one, with some presence of the crowd in the courts across the world.
