Craig Tiley, director of the Australian Open, is confident that Rafael Nadal will compete in the first Grand Slam of the year. Nadal's last match in Melbourne was in 2023, when he was injured in the second round against Mackenzie MacDonald.
Since then, Nadal has struggled with injuries and underwent hip muscle surgery in June. He has also announced that 2024 will be the last season of his career. However, Tiley is optimistic that Nadal will play in the Australian Open, saying, "Rafael is training, and I am watching him closely.
He wants to play, and it all depends on how he gets on. Hopefully, in the next week or two, we will get some concrete confirmation of that." Nadal is a two-time Australian Open champion, winning in 2009 and 2022. He is also the record holder for most Grand Slam singles titles with 22.
Nick Kyrgios should play at the upcoming Australian Open
In addition to Nadal, Tiley also hopes that Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios will play in the tournament. "We spoke to Nick, and he wants to do everything to be able to play in January," Tiley said.
"Nick will be here in January, and it will be great if he plays. But we will see how things go; he has to take care of his health." The Australian Open will be held from January 14 to 28 next year in Melbourne.
Nadal's Last Season
Nadal has announced that 2024 will be his last season on the professional tennis tour.
He has said that he wants to focus on his family and other interests. Nadal is one of the most successful tennis players of all time, having won 22 Grand Slam singles titles, the most of any male player in history. He is also a two-time Olympic gold medalist.
