The Argentinian tennis scene is experiencing a renaissance, as evidenced by seven of its players holding spots in the Top 100 of the Pepperstone ATP Rankings. Even more impressively, three of these players – Francisco Cerundolo, Sebastian Baez, and Tomas Martin Etcheverry – are nestled within the Top 35.
Aged 25, 22, and 24 respectively, this young trio exemplifies the vigor and vitality of Argentine tennis. Their shared generational bond is fortuitous, propelling each player's ambition and competitive spirit. As they journey to establish Argentina as a tennis powerhouse, their collective success builds enthusiasm and promise for the future of the sport in the country.
Baez, fresh from a first-round victory at the US Open against 27th seed Borna Coric, encapsulated this camaraderie, stating, “When one of us succeeds, it fuels motivation for the rest. Our healthy competition promotes growth and mutual encouragement.
It's heartening to see your peers excel, especially those you’ve known since childhood”.
Unwavering Bond Amidst Rivalry
Although their careers sometimes require them to walk different paths, these players never let go of their bond.
Despite the competitive nature of the tour and the challenges of synchronizing schedules, their friendship remains unwavering. Baez notes, “The Tour is fierce. Sometimes, all of us being in Buenos Aires simultaneously is a rarity.
Yet, our camaraderie has always stood the test of time." Currently, Baez’s focus sharpens on his upcoming match in New York against Felipe Meligeni Alves. Ranked 32nd in the Pepperstone ATP, he has been in spectacular form, celebrating consecutive victories in Kitzbühel and Winston-Salem.
However, complacency isn’t in Baez's vocabulary. He emphasizes the importance of consistent effort, stating, “Every match demands my utmost dedication. I concentrate on the immediate challenges, staying grounded and connected to my roots”.
With 11 consecutive match wins, Baez's momentum is undeniable. His only recent setback occurred in Hamburg against Casper Ruud. But adversity is nothing new for the resilient 22-year-old. A particularly stinging defeat came at Roland Garros, where after leading 4-0 in the fifth set against Gael Monfils, Baez watched his advantage crumble.
Yet, such setbacks only strengthen his resolve. Drawing from his triumphant 2021 season, where he clinched six ATP Challenger titles, Baez employs a tried and true approach to adversity: rise stronger after each fall. This philosophy is a testament to his grit, determination, and the ethos of an unwavering tennis prodigy.
