A few months before his retirement from tennis, Roger Federer was still very confident that he could not return to the court. In the summer of last year, the Swiss realized that his knee was not responding in the best way during training sessions and made the decision to retire.
The announcement took place on Instagram on September 15, 2022 and caused a wave of reactions in every corner of the world. The former ATP number 1 has had a truly gigantic impact on the sport, contributing more than any other to the spread of tennis and bringing in a myriad of sponsors.
The 20-time Grand Slam champion said goodbye to tennis played at the Laver Cup, the exhibition he founded himself in 2017. The 41-year-old from Basel played a final doubles match alongside his arch-rival Rafael Nadal at London's O2 Arena, before receiving a truly moving tribute.
Although the King is now enjoying life away from the Tour, many are still hoping for his return to the court. In a brief interview with CNBC, Federer reiterated that he will not return to play on the ATP tour.
Federer doesn't change his mind
Roger explained: "I've never been a big fan of comebacks.
When I made the decision to retire, I thought it through and knew I wasn't going back. I do not regret my choice, because I know very well that I squeezed every last drop of lemon. My career is definitely over. Knee problems have made the last few years very difficult, I can't deny it.
If they had told me three or four years ago that I would have to have three knee surgeries, I would have pulled my hair out!” In the latest edition of the podcast hosted by Marion Bartoli, Ivan Ljubicic revealed how Federer's life has changed since his retirement: "Roger Federer still trains when he can, he's very active and feels good," Ljubicic began without laps of words.
He then added: "I know he would like to enjoy the tennis courts in the next few years too, because it's where he feels best."
