In a long interview, Mats Wilander spent beautiful words for Carlos Alcaraz. Wilander explained: "Carlos Alcaraz is the product of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. He himself admitted that he grew up watching them on TV.
From Rafa he took the passion and love for competition, from Roger the artistic side of the game, while from Novak the ability to cover the pitch. I'm not saying he moves better than Djokovic, but he's definitely faster. His passion is different from Nadal's.
Rafa is a full-fledged warrior, while Carlos struggles with a smile. He reminds me a little of Guga Kuerten in this respect. Alcaraz is a kind of mix between Roger, Rafa and Nole. I thought Stefanos Tsitsipas could take that place, but Carlos passed him." Nicolas Almagro added: "Alcaraz has all it takes to become one of the best ever.
His career promises to give indescribable emotions."
Carlos Alcaraz's rise
It has been known for some time that Carlos Alcaraz was predestined, but no one imagined that he could beat the competition at just 19 years old.
The very young Spaniard is experiencing a dream season, which has led him to become the youngest number 1 in the history of men's tennis. In 2022 alone, Juan Carlos Ferrero's protégé won the US Open, two Masters 1000s (Miami and Madrid) and two ATP 500s (Rio and Barcelona).
His ride to New York left everyone in awe, as did his ability to handle pressure. 'Carlitos' won three consecutive games in the fifth set, even canceling a match point for Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinals. In the final he got the better of Casper Ruud, in what was an authentic play-off for the first place in the ATP ranking.
After the usual photos in Times Square, the Iberian has already flown to Valencia to help his Spain in the Davis Cup.
