"These are important players, we paid a lot. We agreed with the players and the club, but the fact that this happened means that we did something wrong in the past," said the Italian expert. Tottenham brought two good reinforcements during the winter transfer window - Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur arrived from Juventus.
However, he was left without four players. Giovanni Lo Celso, Tanguy Ndombele, Dele Alli and this year's reinforcement Bryan Gil left the club. Although they were not in Antonio Conte's plans, the Italian expert is not satisfied with the fact that they left and that the playing staff is shorter by two players after the January market.
The Spurs bought Bentancur's contract for 19,000,000 euros, while Kulusevski arrived on an 18-month loan for 10,000,000 euros, but the London club has the option to buy him from the Old Lady for 35,000,000 (the option becomes obligatory if the team is placed in the Champions League or when a young winger makes a certain number of appearances).
It seems that Conte could get the most out of the two and that the Uruguayan and the Swede could play important roles in Tottenham, but the problem is that the competition in the team is weakened due to a large number of departures.
Ndombele, who was paid 60,000,000 euros in the summer of 2019, returned to Lyon on loan. Lo Celso was loaned to Villarreal, the young Gil to Valencia, and only Alli, who ended up at Everton without compensation, was sold. In the future, Tottenham will still be able to earn up to 48,000,000 euros from his departure, depending on the number and quality of his performances at Goodison.
Antonio Conte on the situation
The fact is, however, that the four mentioned players have not received too many opportunities since the Italian expert on the team's bench replaced Nuno Espirito Santo. Lo Celso also publicly expressed dissatisfaction that he was not in the protocol for the meeting with Chelsea.
He announced on social networks that he is completely healthy and that he is feeling well, clearly alluding that he was unfairly left out. Conte said that he chose the team and that it was a question for the club. In the end, it is not surprising that the Argentine raised the anchor.
So, there was minus of around 27,000,000 euros in the coffers, considering that only 1,420,000 euros were deposited in the club's account, as much as Lyon paid for Ndombele's loan (he also has the right of redemption for 60,000,000).
Due to all the above, Conte did not hide his dissatisfaction. "These are important players, we paid a lot. It is not normal to lose four players in January. We agreed with the players and the club, but the fact that this happened means that we did something wrong in the past," said the Italian expert.
