Manchester United had a bad release against Southampton

United was amazing in the first round: They won 5:1 against Leeds United and in the next round it was torture. So characteristic of Manchester United. At one point, they demonstrate all their potential, and at the next, they confirm that they are not capable of constantly closing "small" matches, and thus of fighting for the title.

Hand on heart, there are some good habits left from the Manchester club from last season. One of them is that they rarely give up, proven in the second round in the south of England. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team had a goal minus away to Southampton, in the opinion of many, achieved after a referee's mistake, but they did not lose heart, returned from the break and, relying on individual quality, reached the point - 1: 1 (1: 0).

Last season, after falling behind at halftime, they managed to reverse the result in five games, among which was the one against Southampton. Moreover, Southampton managed to lose the advantage in six of the last ten games at home against United, without winning any in that period.

And everything was "drawn" for another in a row. Flying against Leeds in the last round, Manchester United players did not have nearly as much space this afternoon at St. Mary's. Ralph Hasenhuttl's team narrowed their space in the maneuver as much as possible, not allowing the offensive guests to show all their arsenal, while at the other end of the field they waited for their chance, knowing that it would come someday.

Goals

And it arrived. After exactly half an hour of nothing, Jack Stephens made a high pressing, "shook" Bruno Fernandes and passed the ball to his teammates in the attack, and Moussa Djenepo and Adam Armstrong in a short space created an opportunity for Adams, who with good luck, defeated David de Gea.

United players protested because of the way Stephens got to the ball, at first it seemed that they were right, but on the repeated video it seems that the Southampton defender acted according to the regulations. United started strongly from the beginning of the second half, although still without a clear plan on how to endanger Alex McCarthy's goal, and ten minutes of demonstration of individual quality was only enough for an equalizing goal.

Fernandes to Paul Pogba, this one to Mason Greenwood (all in the opponent's penalty area), and the English teenager with a lot of luck, as well as Adams on the other side, through McCarthy's legs for his second goal in the championship.

Shortly afterward, Pogba tried a shot with a weaker foot from the edge of the penalty area after an excellent control of the ball in a small space, but his shot ended up next to the left post. And that was the end of United's attacks.

By the end Southmapton managed to “kill” the game, but they also had two big chances that they didn’t take advantage of. Solskjaer will obviously have to change something if he wants to compete for the title
