Manchester United has looked much better this season than previous ones. Third, then second place in the Premier League, and the semifinals, then the finals of the Europe League. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is aware, however, that a season without a title or a European trophy does not meet the ambitions of the giant from Old Trafford and therefore announces: "If we want to be competitive, we will have to strengthen the team."
It is clear to the Norwegian that Manchester City is much better at the moment, primarily due to the larger selection of top players that Pep Guardiola has at his disposal, and in the Europa League final with Villarreal, it was clear that United still needed something to return to the old path.
That something, champion quality, Solskjaer hopes that Kieran Trippier, Jaydon Sancho, and Rafael Varane can bring. The English media mention the right-back of Atletico Madrid, the wing of Borussia Dortmund, and the defender of Real Madrid as the wishes of the young coach in the summer transfer window, but the compensation will have a decisive word.
It has long been known for Sancho that Borussia is asking for a nine-figure amount, which they are ready to pay at Old Trafford, while in the case of Trippier, they are playing on emotions and the fact that his contract expires in a year.
The Bury-born England international comes from a family of Manchester United fans, so they hope at Old Trafford that the 30-year-old will choose to come to the red part of Manchester and in some way redeem himself for playing for city rival City as a teenager.
The financial crisis should also have an impact, ie the big debts of Atletico, which bought Trippier from Tottenham for 22,000,000 euros, but given the overall situation, it is unlikely that they will be able to hope for similar compensation.
When it comes to Varane, the Frenchman is also entering the last year of his contract with Real, and United - according to some English media - is trying to get him with a salary twice as high as he has in Madrid, ie with 12,000,000 euros per season.
Even the Spanish media wrote that the reliable 28-year-old defender is considering changing the club this summer, however, the return of Carlo Ancelotti at the Santiago Bernabeu could change his decision. Just like in the case of Cristiano Ronaldo, who could also be read to be about to return to Old Trafford, but also to Madrid.
The second, however, seems more realistic. In addition to the three, in a relation with United is one of the stars of this transfer window in England, defensive midfielder Declan Rice from West Ham, and, in case Varane refuses the invitation, 24-year-old Villarreal stopper Pau Torres is also their target.
