Luis Suarez did not leave Barcelona for free

Luis Suarez was not Barcelona's gift to Atletico Madrid, claims Catalan Sport. The leader of the Spanish championship, however, paid for the services of the Uruguayan striker, who continued to terrorize the opponent's nets in the new environment.

According to the documents obtained by the editorial office of the mentioned paper, Barça agreed with Atletico on a fixed price of 5,000,000 euros, while another 6,000,000 could be earned through various clauses.

Thus, Blaugrana with the best scorer of the Primera Division (16 goals) parted ways for a potential 11,000,000 euros. Many were shocked by Barcelona's decision to part with El Pistolero. Financial problems eventually forced the management to cut and hand out clean papers to several first-team players.

At first, it was thought that the Catalans had not earned anything since Suarez's departure. Allegedly, the desire of the Uruguayan football player was to change the environment as a free player. Revolted by the club's decision to put him on the shooting list, they did not want to realize any benefit during the parting of Barça.

The Catalans reached an agreement behind the scenes with Atletico Madrid. Despite the wishes of the former striker of Ajax and Liverpool, they managed to earn a net 5,000,000 euros.

Girezzman is involved

However, the money did not flow directly into the box office at Camp Nou.

Antoine Griezmann is also involved in the whole story. It may sound unbelievable, but Barça still owes money to Madrid for the transfer of the French footballer. In the summer of 2019, they paid 120,000,000 for the world champion from Russia, and thus activated the release clause in his contract.

Later, the executive director of Athletic claimed that the Catalans owe another 80,000,000 euros. He could also support the claims with documents that indicate that Barça reached an agreement with the Frenchman at a time when his clause amounted to as much as 200,000,000 euros.

The Catalans then waited for it to fall by 40 percent, but in the end, in order to avoid going to court, they agreed to pay another "symbolic" 15,000,000 euros. They justified the new expense by purchasing the preemptive right to the services of Saul Niguez and Jose Maria Gimenez.

The story about Suarez came at the right time for both teams, in the end, Josep Bartomeu and Enrique Cerezo agreed to deduct 5,000,000 euros from Barca's debt in the name of the transfer of the 33-year-old striker. When it comes to additional clauses, which could potentially bring the Catalans another 6,000,000 euros, Barça has already secured the first third.

Suarez needed to make 20 appearances for Atletico Madrid. The other will depend on Chelsea. Namely, if Atletico passes the Blues in the 1/8th finals of the Champions League, Barca's debt to Atletico will be shorter by another 2,000,000 euros.

The compensation will be completed if the Colcioneros reach the quarterfinals of the elite competition next season as well. An important item is the salary of Luis Suarez. Atletico pays him slightly less than Barcelona, but by the end of the current competition year, the Catalans will pay him the difference.

Since his contract with Blaugrana would expire in the summer of this year, after that, the Catalans will not have any obligations towards El Pistolero.
