Bartomeu: Messi will retire in Barcelona

Josep Maria Bartomeu-president of Barcelona has been under criticism for a long time. Barcelona fans are dissatisfied with his commitment and work at the club. Many fans would like him to leave the club but it looks like that won’t happen any time soon.

In an interview with Mundo Deportivo, he spoke about Messi, Suarez and the role of Marc Ander Ter-Stegen "Messi has said many times that he wants to retire here and I have no doubt that he will renew,” “Luis has a contract that, depending on the number of games he plays, automatically renews for the 2021-22 season,” he said.

When asked who was the first priority to renew the contract, Bartomeu replied "For me, Marc-Andre ter Stegen's. Not only for his quality as a goalkeeper but for his personality as a player." “He is a fixture in the dressing room and the future.

For a goalkeeper, he is still very young and already in the elite. And at 28 he is one of the three best in the world. “He understands what is happening in society and knows that given the decrease in income for clubs like Barca, he must adjust his salary.

All the players are doing it and we are working on it”.

New signings

Barcelona fans are also not satisfied with the newly signed players. They think that Pjanić is a good player but that he is already old and that such a player should have been brought earlier.

They are not overly optimistic about new arrivals because Barcelona's transfer policy has been very bad lately. Asked about the summer transfer deadline and new signings, Bartomeu replied: “Pedri, who is a young player with incredible talent.

[Francisco] Trincão, who was very unknown, we signed him in January and he is already the best U-21 in Europe. And Matheus Fernandes, who has played little because he has had some problems coming to Spain, already has them in order and has made few appearances but [of a good] quality at Valladolid.

And [Miralem] Pjanic is a player who will surely come and integrate [from] the very first minute in the first team. It is very exciting to see Barça B players coming up [too]. From [Ronald] Araujo, a central defender who will surely have a place in the first team, to Riqui Puig and Ansu Fati”.

Xavi Hernandez, the club’s legend has been mentioned as a potential new Barcelona coach and fans believe he has Barcelona’s DNA to help him get Barcelona back to where it belongs. Bartomeu explained, “I have an excellent relationship with Xavi and [he is someone] with whom I talk about many topics.

But next year Quique Setien has a contract and he is the one we have hired. I trust him and his team. He is very clear about his game model and Barça’s style. He is a veteran with experience and good psychology [skills], and the fact that he has self-criticized reaffirms what I think of him: that he can win the Champions League and move forward next season”.
