In a highly contentious move that shocked football enthusiasts worldwide, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) made the decision to remove French superstar, Kylian Mbappé, from their lineup. The reason? Mbappé declined to extend his contract with the club, which is set to expire next summer.
However, the club's management may have overplayed their hand, as the French Footballer’s Union (UNFP) reacted vehemently to this decision, stating it could amount to "psychological abuse" of an employee, and potentially result in criminal charges under French law.
The French team's retaliation for Mbappé's refusal, which included threats of obstructing his potential departure as a free agent, has drawn wide criticism and legal scrutiny.
Legal Implications and Union Reactions
It appears that PSG may have overlooked the legal implications of their drastic actions, seemingly unaware or dismissive of the fact that their pressure tactics could be a violation of French law.
"These players must enjoy the same working conditions as the rest of the professional workforce," read a statement from the UNFP, as reported by BBC Sport. The union further stated, "The UNFP feels it would be useful to remind managers that putting pressure on an employee - via the deterioration of their working conditions, for example - to force them to leave or accept what the employer wants constitutes moral harassment, which French law firmly condemns.
The UNFP reserves the right to take civil and criminal action against any club that behaves in this way."
Mbappé's Stellar Career at PSG
Since joining PSG in the summer of 2017, Mbappé has made significant contributions to the team, demonstrating a stunning performance with a tally of 212 goals in a total of 260 matches.
His potential removal from the team could have major implications, both on and off the pitch. While it is speculated that Mbappé could potentially leave PSG for a hefty price of 150 million euros, the feasibility of such a transaction remains uncertain, given his contract's looming expiry date.
