Carson Wentz addresses Colts owner saying signing him was 'mistake'

Washington Commanders quarterback Carson Wentz admitted he was a bit caught off guard following the comments Indianapolis Colts Jim Irsay made after he was traded to the Commanders. A year ago, the Colts traded for Wentz, hoping he would be their answer at the quarterback position for many years.

Instead, the Wentz and Colts tenure lasted only one season as the Colts moved on from the quarterback after the 2021 season. When Irsay was asked about Wentz, he basically said there was no point in continuing with something after you realize it was a mistake.

“I mean, it is what it is, you know. Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion,” Wentz said on Colin Cowherd's podcast, per Pro Football Talk. “I thought last year was a really fun year. I thought we did some incredible things, came up short at the end.

Obviously I struggled down the stretch there and timing was poor. But yeah, I didn’t expect that. I didn’t expect things to unfold the way they did and I thought things were in a pretty good place there.I had awesome relationships with every single person in that building.

Can’t say enough good things about the people over there. Yeah, it kinda came out of left field, you know? He’s entitled to his own opinion and he’s entitled to do what he wants with his football team”.

The comments Irsay made about Wentz

“I think the worst thing you can do is have a mistake and try to keep living with it going forward,” Irsay told Indystar. “For us, it was something we had to move away from as a franchise.

It was very obvious”. The Colts were in a great position to make the playoffs but they lost to the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 17 and the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 18, respectively. The Jaguars were one of the worst teams in the NFL last season and Wentz failing to lead the team a victory in Week 18 was what ultimately sealed his fate in Indianapolis.

“No disrespect to Jacksonville, but I mean, they’re the worst team in the league. You play well and hard for the first quarter or so, and they’re looking to go to their locker room and clean it out. I’ve never seen anything like that in my life,” Irsay said.

“You say, 'My God, there’s something wrong here.' It needs to be corrected. I think that we feel like we did”. Wentz is now with the Commanders, while the Colts have signed veteran quarterback Matt Ryan.
