Deshaun Watson reportedly had no interest in playing for the Philadelphia Eagles because he trains with Jalen Hurts in the offseason and he didn't want to take his starting quarterback spot. The Eagles were viewed as a potential suitor for Watson but the quarterback never showed interest in joining the team.
According to John McMullen of Philly Voice, Watson has a good relationship with Hurts and didn't want to take his job in Philadelphia. “The interesting part is why Watson was so steadfast in his refusal to come to Philadelphia from start to finish in this entire saga.
The principles aren’t going on record anytime soon but the strongly held belief around the league is that Watson’s aversion to the Eagles had to do with his loyalty to Jalen Hurts," John McMullen of Philly Voice reported.
“Sources familiar with Watson’s sentiments pointed to the relationship built between the two players in the offseason through the connection of working with the same QB trainer, Quincy Avery”.
Watson ended up with the Cleveland Browns
Watson agreed to waive his no-trade clause for the Browns as the Houston Texans accepted the trade package the Browns sent them.
The Browns have received some criticism for acquiring Watson, who faces 22 civil lawsuits from several women. However, Browns owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam insistsed they did their due diligence before faciliating the trade.
“We spent a tremendous amount of time exploring and investigating the opportunity to trade for Deshaun Watson. We are acutely
aware and empathetic to the highly personal sentiments expressed about this decision. Our team’s comprehensive evaluation process was of utmost importance due to the sensitive nature of his situation and the complex factors involved.
We also understand there are still some legal proceedings that are ongoing and we will respect due process. It was pivotal that we, along with Andrew Berry and Kevin Stefanski, meet with Deshaun to have a straightforward dialogue, discuss our priorities, and hear directly from him on how he wants to approach his career on and off the field," Browns owner Jimmy Haslam and Dee Haslam said.
"He was humble, sincere, and candid. In our conversations, Deshaun detailed his commitment to leading our team; he understands and embraces the hard work needed to build his name both in the community and on the field. Those in-depth conversations, the extensive evaluation process, his dedication to being a great teammate and devotion to helping others within the NFL, within the community, and through his charitable initiatives provided the foundation for us to pursue Deshaun.
We are confident in Deshaun and excited about moving forward with him as our quarterback and supporting his genuine and determined efforts”.
