NFL insider reveals why Baker Mayfield stopped communicating with Cleveland Browns

Baker Mayfield stopped communicating with the Cleveland Browns because his camp believed the Browns would trade for Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins, per Jason Lloyd of The Athletic. After the Browns' season ended, team general manager Andrew Berry told Mayfield's agent the Browns "would only pursue one of the elite quarterbacks."

The Browns were successful in their attempt to land a big name quarterback as on Friday they agreed with the Houston Texans on a trade centered around Deshaun Watson. “Baker Mayfield stopped communicating with the Browns.

His side believed they would trade for Kirk Cousins. Andrew Berry told his agent they would only pursue one of the elite guys if they could get one. Turns out, they got one,” Jason Lloyd reports.

Mayfield saw the writing on the wall

Last week, Mayfield posted a lengthy message to Browns fans and the entire city of Cleveland.

Mayfield, who was drafted at No. 1 in the 2018 NFL draft, Mayfield promised he would give his best to lead the Browns to their first Super Bowl victory but unfortunately that didn't happen. However, Mayfield did lead the Browns to their first playoff appearance since 2002.

"With many uncertainties, here is where my head and heart is," Mayfield wrote. "The past 4 years have been nothing short of truly life changing since I heard my name called in the draft to go to Cleveland.

This is not a message with hidden meaning. This is strictly to thank the city of Cleveland for embracing my family and me. We have made many memories and shared growing in this process through all the ups and downs. "I have no clue what happens next, which is the meaning behind the silence I have had during the duration of this process.

I can only control what I can, which is trusting in God's plan throughout this process. I have given this franchise everything I have. That is something I've always done at every stage, and at every level. And that will not change wherever I take my next snap.

Whatever happens ... I just want to say thank you to the fans who truly embraced who I am and the mentality that aligned so well with this city's hard working people." The Mayfield era in Cleveland is over and the former No. 1 pick will be looking to get back his career on the right track somewhere else.
