Some Cleveland Browns fans don't appear too much happy about Deshaun Watson replacing Baker Mayfield as the team's starting quarterback. After the Browns traded for Watson, Browns put up a "F--- Watson" sign in Cleveland.
On Thursday, it was reported that the Cleveland Browns were out of the mix for Watson.
Watson reportedly left only the New Orleans and Atlanta Falcons on his list but on Friday he had a sudden change of heart and decided to sign with the Browns. Last week, it was confirmed Watson would not face any criminal chargers after 22 women filled civil lawsuits against him.
"It's definitely a very emotional moment for me. I know we're far from being done of handling what we need to handle on the legal side, but today is definitely a big day," Watson, speaking to reporters for the first time in over a year, said at a news conference outside his lawyer's office building.
"I thank my lord and savior Jesus Christ for letting the truth be heard. And I thank everyone that was a part of this for seeing and hearing both sides. That's what my point and my team wanted to do, is have a fair slate of us telling our side of the story and letting the conclusion come to what happened today, and that's what the grand jury decided on.
"I'm just going to keep fighting to rebuild my name and rebuild my appearance in the community. And on the legal side handle what we need to handle. But also ready to get on the field, and prep for that."
Watson in, Mayfield out
Meanwhile, Mayfield bid a farewell to Browns fans even before Watson decided to sign with the team.
"With many uncertainties, here is where my head and heart is," Mayfield wrote. "The past 4 years have been nothing short of truly life changing since I heard my name called in the draft to go to Cleveland.
This is not a message with hidden meaning. This is strictly to thank the city of Cleveland for embracing my family and me. We have made many memories and shared growing in this process through all the ups and downs. "I have no clue what happens next, which is the meaning behind the silence I have had during the duration of this process.
I can only control what I can, which is trusting in God's plan throughout this process. I have given this franchise everything I have. That is something I've always done at every stage, and at every level. And that will not change wherever I take my next snap.
Whatever happens ... I just want to say thank you to the fans who truly embraced who I am and the mentality that aligned so well with this city's hard working people."
