Coach Urban Meyer apologized to the Jacksonville Jaguars and said he was hearbroken that it finished on the way it did. The Jaguars fired Meyer after just 13 games with the team but their decision to fire Meyer wasn't mainly due to the fact that the team has struggled to win games this season.
The Jaguars are 2-11 and they had been constantly surrounded by controversy during the Meyer tenure. "I just apologize to Jacksonville," Meyer told NFL Network. "I love Jacksonville. It's one of the reasons I took the job.
I still think Shad [Khan is] a great owner. It's heartbreaking. I just had a dream of it becoming a destination place with a new facility he agreed to build and some day to walk into that stadium where it's standing room only.
Because I know how bad the people of Jacksonville want it. "So, I'm just heartbroken that we weren't able to do that. I still believe it's going to be done. It's too good of a place."
Meyer thought the Jaguars could have done better
"Yeah, I do.
Most certainly," Meyer said. "It hasn't exactly materialized the way I expected it to have, the experience of winning games. I knew that this was somewhat of a build. I also really believe that we have plenty of good enough players to go win games.
I still believe that. That's why I get so disappointed sometimes with our coaching staff or myself, because I think we can do better than we're doing. Really disappointed." Meyer found himself in several controversial situations and it negatively impacted the team.
Rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence said the Meyer firing brings focus to the team. "I wouldn't believe you if you told me this is how this year was going to go," Lawrence said, per ESPN. " ... I think it [the coaching change] brings a little bit of clarity to the guys in the locker room.
I wouldn't say relief, but I would say just bring some clarity and some direction moving forward. "You know, we really want to go and finish the season strong and to be honest, it's been hard to last the last week with everything going on.
And there's a lot of things being stirred up I think by the outside, too. That didn't help [and] made things a lot worse, but also everything that's going on. "It's hard to be focused and have all your attention and efforts going towards winning the game when there's so many things going on."
