San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has revealed that Trey Lance will get some playing time during the regular season. The Niners, who drafted Lance at No. 3 in the 2021 NFL draft, won't start Lance right from the start but he is now expected to get some playing in 2021.
The Niners are sticking to Jimmy Garoppolo as their starting quarterback but that could change if the 29-year-old quarterback fails to lead the team to wins. “Trey’s going to play this year,” Shanahan said, via Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News.
I know everyone’s now gonna rush to Twitter, but situationally he’s going to play. Doesn’t mean he’s going to start but he’ll get plays. . . . He will get reps with the ones”.
Lance will likely replace Garoppolo
After the Niners drafted Lance, some thought it meant they were moving on from Garoppolo.
In May, Garoppolo hinted he considered requesting a trade from the Ninets. “When it initially happened, there’s a million emotions that go on throughout your head, and you think of all the possible scenarios and things like that,” Garoppolo said in May.
“But at the end of the day, I want to play football. I want to go out there and win games. That’s what I do. And so it wasn’t anything too crazy. It took a little while to process everything. But once I did, it was just, ‘Go out there and ball.’ You got to go out and attack it.
The NFL is a crazy business. Things happen, but you have to attack it day by day and make the best of it”. Garoppolo has faced many criticism throughout his tenure with the Niners. However, Garoppolo led the Niners to a Super Bowl appearance in the 2019 season.
Unfortunately for Garoppolo, the Niners were beaten in that Super Bowl by the Kansas City Chiefs. “Being in the NFL for as long as I have, you kind of get used to it,” Garoppolo said of criticism. “It kind of comes with the job.
It’s one of those things that it keeps pushing you, though. “When you hear those critiques and you hear those little things out there, it pushes you to take your game to the next level. We’re all competitors out there.
We all want to go [play] the perfect game, and at the end of the day, that’s what we’re trying to do. I’ll keep pushing myself."
