New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick claims their new quarterback Cam Newton is a hard-working player and he is doing everything he can to fit well into the team. After 19 seasons and six Super Bowls won, long-time Patriots quarterback Tom Brady left this offseason to with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Newton, who led the Carolina Panthers to a Super Bowl appearance in 2015, was named the NFL MVP the same season. "He’s an extremely hard-working player,” Belichick said on the Rich Eisen Show, per Pro Football Talk.
“First-guy in, last-one out type of guy. He’s really studied hard and has spent a lot of extra time trying to learn our offense, our communication, our calls, nomenclature and so forth. I’ve been very impressed with that.
He’s done a good job of picking it up. He’s a very skilled athlete. We’re just working through it day by day. We have a long way to go. “We’ve got a very competitive competition at a very competitive position at the quarterback spot.
It will be interesting to see how everybody does”.
Belichick admits the Patriots brought Newton because they wanted competition
Last year, the Patriots drafted quarterback Jarrett Stidham in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL draft.
It is still unclear who will start for the Patriots this season as the team believes Stidham has the potential to be a good quarterback in the league. "We wanted to add competition,” Belichick said. “We always try to add competition to our team, and we felt like we’d be able to do that.
He was very open to talking about and working with our situation. We were able to work things out. We’ll just take it day by day and see how it goes. I’m glad we have him. “It’s been fun to work with him.
He’s a very talented player with a unique skillset. Again, we’ll see where it all goes, but he’s got a lot to work with”. Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman recently spoke extremely highly of Newton.
"When you first meet him, just his stature. He's large -- put together well," Edelman said of Newton, as quoted on ESPN. "He has a great energy about himself. I was really impressed with his work ethic and mindset." It remains to be seen will Newton win the starting job at the quarterback position for the Patriots.
