Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield admitted he lost himself in all the chaos surrounding the team last season but now he is feeling much better and excited about the new season. Mayfield, the first overall pick of the 2018 NFL draft, also won the Heisman Trophy at Oklahoma and set the NFL rookie record when he threw for 27 touchdown passes in 2018.
Following the addition of Odell Beckham Jr.. last offseason, the Browns formed one of the most offensively gifted teams in the NFL. But instead of contending for the Super Bowl, the Browns were making the headlines for all the wrong reasons and eventually missed out on the playoffs after a 6-10 record.
"Having success all through high school and college and having that standard so high, and the past couple of years have just been a roller coaster of emotions and not nearly as much success as I'm used to," Mayfield said, per ESPN.
"So I would say I lost myself, not having that success, not finding out what was working. I think I tried different ways of trying to have that success, and I didn't find it. "So I lost myself in that, and I wasn't able to be who I [need to be] for these guys on the team."
Mayfield in top physical condition
New Browns general manager Andre Berry claimed Mayfield reported to training camp in "terrific shape." "I think there was a lot of plays -- looking back on last year -- physically, I wasn't able to work out as much, being beat up.
So I was heavier than I was ever playing before," said Mayfield, who twice had to temporarily leave games with separate injuries to his throwing hand and wrist. ".. I needed to be able to have the scrambling ability to move in the pocket.
It's my job to be in prime physical shape, to show up and do my job on Sundays." The Browns are still one of the most talented teams in the NFL and if they can put it all together on the field this year, big things could happen.
Mayfield wants to get back to his old self and be confident in his every move. "I think that's one of those things that I talked about with our team -- you gotta find that belief. You gotta find that confidence in yourself," he said.
"And that's what I've based my story on, my whole career on, is confidence in myself and taking those chances."
