Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio has acknowledged that quarterback Tyrod Taylor will be ready to play if Deshaun Watson is suspended or traded this offseason. Taylor left the Los Angeles Chargers this offseason to join the Texans.
"In his particular case, he has experience with coaches on our staff, or has some experience in this type of offense or system,” Caserio said during his press conference, per Pro Football Talk. “So regardless, that was a position where quite frankly we didn’t have very many numbers.
A.J. [McCarron] was a free agent. Josh [McCown] retired. So when you have one player at any one position on the team, you need more than one person. So I think that’s kind of how we approached it and just went through our process and evaluated it accordingly.
“I’d say generally speaking when you look at the whole roster construction in the offseason program, what we try to do just at all positions with the entire team is try to identify players we thought we liked that may have had some experience with our staff that were looking for the opportunity to compete, to be in a good situation, that wanted to be in Houston.
So he certainly fell into that category, like a lot of other players”.
Taylor could start as Watson is in trouble
22 women have sued Watson but Caserio didn't want to comment on it. "I know Cal [McNair] and ownership put a letter out a few weeks ago, just relative to the organizational stance, relative to where we are.
So I don’t have anything to add other than it’s a legal process,” Caserio said. “We’re respectful of the legal process and where that is. So we’re focused on today. We’re focused on getting ready for the offseason program and getting ready for the draft.
So that’s where our focus is”. "We’re not going to get into a lot of hypotheticals, a lot of speculation,” Caserio said. “I’m not really good at that. Maybe someone else is better at that than me.
If you want to speculate, probably go buy bitcoin and focus on that. We’re going to focus on the things we can control, which is getting ready for the draft and trying to take advantage of the opportunities to continue to add to our team and build our roster. And we’ll just take it one day at a time and focus on the things we can control”.
