In a strategic move to strengthen their coaching lineup, the Los Angeles Rams have announced the elevation of Chris Shula to the role of defensive coordinator. This decision comes in the wake of Raheem Morris's recent appointment as the Atlanta Falcons' head coach, leaving a significant vacancy in the Rams' coaching staff.

The announcement, initially reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter, highlights the Rams' confidence in Shula's abilities to steer their defense. The Rams, under the leadership of head coach Sean McVay, conducted an extensive search for the perfect candidate, considering both external and internal options.

Among the notable external candidates was Ron Rivera, the former head coach of the Commanders. However, the Rams' search also focused inward, with defensive backs coach Aubrey Pleasant being another strong contender for the position.

Shula's Ascending Career

Chris Shula, who boasts an impressive NFL lineage as the grandson of the legendary Hall of Fame coach Don Shula, has been a part of the Rams organization for seven seasons. His journey with the team began as an assistant linebackers coach and has seen a steady ascent, culminating in his most recent role as pass rush coordinator and linebackers coach.

In 2022, Shula added the responsibility of pass game coordinator to his resume, further demonstrating his versatility and deep understanding of the game. Shula's tenure with the Rams has been marked by consistent growth and recognition within the league.

Notably, the Miami Dolphins expressed interest in interviewing him for a coordinator position, a testament to his rising profile in NFL coaching circles. Fox Sports' Peter Schrager reported that Shula's interview with the Rams was "incredibly impressive," leading to a decision that is expected to be widely embraced by the team's current staff.

The Rams are also reportedly considering internal candidates for other coaching vacancies. Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports revealed that assistant defensive line coach AC Carter is being interviewed for a more prominent role.

Carter, a relative newcomer to NFL coaching, made a significant impact in his short time with the Rams, playing a key role in the development of rookie Kobie Turner, who led the team with nine sacks last season.
