Saquon Barkley warns Giants what could happen next after failed contract negotiations

Saquon Barkley has indicated that he could miss a certain number of games or even the entire season just to show the New York Giants how valuable he is to the team. After Barkley and the Giants failed to agree on a new deal by the July 17 deadline, there is certain uncertainty regarding the running back's next move.

In recent months, Barkley made it perfectly clear that he wanted a new deal and not to play under a franchise tag in 2023. If Barkley signs the franchise tag tender, that would pay him $10.1 million in 2023. But Barkley didn't get his contract wish fulfilled and there is now the possibility of Barkley opting to hold out in 2023.

Barkley on what he might do next

On The Money Matters Podcast on YouTube, Barkley explained he could simply say "screw you" to the Giants and teammates and then hold out. “And be like, ‘You want me to show you my worth? You want me to show you how valuable I am to the team? I won’t show up.

I won’t play a down.’ And that’s a play I could use. Anybody [who] knows me, knows that’s not something I want to do. Is it something that’s crossed my mind? I never thought I would ever do that, but now I’m at a point where I’m like, ‘Jesus, I might have to take it to this level.’ Am I prepared to take it to this level? I don’t know.

That’s something I have to sit down and talk to my family, talk to my team [of advisers] and strategize about this. Can’t just go off of emotions. I can try to get as much money as I can, but what really matters is winning.

I know if I’m able to help bring a championship to New York, that’s going to go miles more ahead than this contract," Barkley said on the podcast, via Sports Illustrated.
