Baker Mayfield says a stint with the Los Angeles Rams helped him rediscover fun and joy for the game. After the Carolina Panthers cut Mayfield in early December, Mayfield was signed by the Rams - who needed a quarterback to replace injured Matthew Stafford.
In his very first game for the Rams, Mayfield led the Rams to a stunning fourth-quarter comeback win over the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday Night Football. For Mayfield, that was one of the best moments he had on the field in years.
Before signing with the Rams, Mayfield had a tumultuous time with the Cleveland Browns and his stint with the Panthers didn't go well either. After the season ended, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Mayfield to likely replace retired Tom Brady as their starting quarterback.
“I’m a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. It was the first time I had fun playing football in a few years. It brought that feeling of having that success and really remembering what it was all about, Kind of hit the reset button for me," Mayfield said, via The New York Post.
Mayfield looking forward to his time with the Buccaneers
Mayfield, 28, was once considered one of the most talented quarterbacks in the game. After getting his career back on the right track during a short stint with the Rams, Mayfield is hoping to continue to trend in the right direction in 2023.
“I wouldn't say that the last year really humbled me. I learned a lot from it. I still believed in myself like that's the only way I was able to, to get through it and finish on somewhat of a high note like real life, and, yeah, I'm thankful for all the experience to have gone through and that's what's gotten me here so ready for the next chapter," Mayfield said in March. If Mayfield does well in 2023, the Buccaneers could end up being his home for a long time.
