Aaron Donald has confirmed that he plans to play at least through the 2023 season. Donald, 31, currently has two more years on his current contract. After the 2022 season, Donald can walk away and face no financial consequences.
Going into the new season, Donald is committed to helping the Rams win. “I got a two-year commitment right now, so I’m going to do everything I can while I’m here to help the organization win and be successful,” Donald told Peter King for his Football Morning in America column, via Pro Football Talk.
“I’m gonna last as long as I can, as long as I can play at a high level”. Just before the start of this past Super Bowl, ex-NFL player Rodney Hudson said on air Donald told he he'd retire if the Rams. The Rams beat the Cincinnati Bengals and Donald became a Super Bowl champion for the first time in his career.
After Donald was asked to comment, he revealed that playing in the NFL for eight years was always his plan. Donald arrived to the NFL in 2014 and since then he has been one of the best defensive players.
Donald: I was talking about retirement way before the Super Bowl
"But me talking about retirement, that was happening way before we won a Super Bowl.
I've been saying that since I got into the league that I was going to play eight years and be done. That's just what I've been saying. It just came out and then everybody think that, 'Oh, he said if he wins a Super Bowl he's going to retire.'
Nah, I got teammates, coaches, my family who know about this. I said I'm going to play eight years, and I'm going to probably be done playing football," he said. After taking some time to decide his next step, Donald decided to return to the Rams for the 2022 season.
"But winning a Super Bowl, you get kind of a little addicted to it. I want to feel that again. I ain't going to lie, that experience is like none other. If I was to play, it's just to win another Super Bowl, but at the end of the day, it's still a business and it got to make sense to me and my family," Donald added.
Heading into the 2022 season, the Rams are considered among top favorites for the Super Bowl. It remains to be seen if Donald and the Rams can repeat as Super Bowl champions.
