Brian Lewis of The New York Post is reporting that Kyrie Irving intends to play for the Brooklyn Nets and that the guard has never requested a trade. Two weeks ago, Irving opted into the final year of his contract with the Nets.
Just a couple of days later, Kevin Durant requested a trade. Since then, the Nets have been taking calls regarding the availability of Irving and Durant. Both Irving and Durant are available and Irving is linked with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Brian Lewis of The New York Post spoke to a source with the knowledge of the situation. “How did we get into this situation about trade, when he opted in?” the source asked rhetorically. “Here is the situation.
He opted in, which means he had and he has every intention of playing with the Brooklyn Nets. KD decides he wants out and now everybody is talking about trading Kyrie, right? Kyrie has not asked for a trade. Now, if the Nets don’t want him, that’s something totally different.
Kyrie has not said he wants a trade. He opted in. [So where did] the trade conversations come from? Is it because KD requested a trade and now everybody’s like let’s trade Ky? Kyrie opted in”.
The source: Irving wants to play for the Nets
“Kyrie wants to play.
He wants to win a championship, and he wants to play,” the source told The Post. “I think when KD said he wanted a trade, he didn’t say I’m going to trade to where Kyrie goes”. Since the start of free agency, Irving has been linked with the Lakers The Lakers want Irving but they have yet to be really aggressive for the star guard.
According to Trevor Lane of Lakers Nation, the Lakers' reluctance to attach a second first round draft pick is what's stopping the trade from happening. “There were some rumors going around that I saw on the Twittersphere that the buzz in summer league was that the deal is going to get done with Kyrie Irving, and I do want to confirm that,” Lane said.
“Now, I’m not saying it’s done. I’m not saying it’s definitely happening. But I am saying that the general consensus from everybody that I spoke to out there — and I did talk to a lot of people — the general consensus was that sooner or later, Kyrie Irving will wind up with the Los Angeles Lakers”. It remains to be seen where will Irving play next season.
